An Introduction to Rosacea
Rosacea is a complex, varied and progressive inflammatory skin disorder,
distinct from acne and "sensitive skin".
Rosacea is Progressive
In the beginning, rosacea produces symptoms of frequent, lasting flushing
and skin irritation.
Left untreated, rosacea may worsen and produce a broad spectrum of clinical
signs: coarse skin texture, papules and pustules, and more permanent
facial damage in the form of broken capillaries, scarring, hyperplasia
and rhinophyma.
Facial Redness (Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea)
Rosacea sufferers typically experience flushing and persistant facial redness.
Small blood vessels may become visible in some individuals, and stinging,
burning, swelling and roughness or scaling may occur. A common approach
is to remove capillaries with IPL, while this may provide temporary relief, it does
not address the underlying problem.

Bumps and Pimples (Papulopustular Rosacea)
In addition to persistant redness, bumps (papules) and/or pimples (pustules)
are common in many rosacea sufferers. Some individuals may also experience
raised red patches known as plaques.
Often referred to as "acne rosacea", papules and pustules are superimposed on
a background of telangiectasias (capillaries) and general erythema. It differs
from acne vulgaris in that it lacks comedones.
Individuals with acne rosacea tend to blush easily, which tends to exacerbate
the severity of the condition. Common triggers include, alcohol, sunlight,
spicy foods and hot beverages.

Typical Rosacea Treatment
The trajectory of "current" rosacea treatment is unsatisfactory:
-rosacea patients are frequently embarrassed to seek help, or feel that their
condition is simply cosmedic and unworthy of treatment.
-Standard medical regimens (metronidazole/azelaic acid/sulfacetamide and
oral antibiotics) are poorly adhered to and are associated with negative side
effects. Topical drugs may lessen symptoms, but deteriorate other aspects of
skin quality.
-Poorly informed consultants have served to confuse rosacea treatment options,
or continue to make recommendations firmly grounded in marketing, rather than
science, a serious issue considering effective, early treatment is vital.
-The current climate has resulted in rosacea patients seeking a quick and easy
cure. It is important to remain compliant and consistant with any treatment
protocol.
-In some instances, overly aggressive treatments may lead to a worsening of the
condition, or creation of additional symptoms such as spider veins.
